Once a year, pedestrians get a chance to cross the Mackinac Bridge without benefit of motors and wheels. Every Labor Day, the Mackinac Bridge Walk attracts thousands of people who want to get up close and personal with one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. The walk starts in St. Ignace, at the bridge's north end, and wraps up in Mackinaw City, at the bridge's south end. Everyone who completes the walk gets a numbered certificate, which, if he or she, can match up with numbers on display at various Mackinaw City merchants, entitles the participant to a prize.
Alongside the walk, 500 runners chosen by lottery take part in the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run, a non-competitive jog across the "Mighty Mac."
