Don't worry...the Porcupine Mountains aren't crawling with the prickly-quilled creatures who wreak painful havoc at the slightest touch. Instead, the mountains received their name from the Ojibwe, who decided that the mountains' silhouette resembled that of a porcupine. In 1945, the mountains became a state park that today offers a variety of recreational offerings, including hiking, camping, swimming, and boating. The "Porkies" are also home to Lake of the Clouds, a 133-acre waterway nestled in a valley between two of the mountains' ridges.
Annual events include the Snowburst Winter Carnival and the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival.
