Laurium Manor

Laurium

When Thomas H. Hoatson, owner of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co., and his wife, Cornelia, decided to build a new home in 1908, they spared no expense. Their abode, plus its furnishings, cost $85,000 (approximately $2 million in today's money), and contains 45 rooms that take up 13,000 square feet. Now, the four-story building is an inn whose owners, in addition to providing accommodations, offer tours that let visitors explore this opulent symbol of Copper Country industry.

The Calumet Theatre

Calumet

By Andrew Jameson (Own work) [CC BY-SA 3.0 or GFDL], via Wikimedia Commons

While you're watching a live show at The Calumet Theatre, or simply taking a tour through its opulent exterior, don't be surprised if you happen upon another visitor---one of the otherworldly persuasion. The spirit of Madame Helena Modjeska, a 19th-century Polish actress, is said to have appeared to a fellow (albeit living) actress who forgot her lines during a performance at the theatre a few decades ago. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, you can't deny that The Calumet Theatre has a storied history, including performances by the likes of such artists as Lillian Russell, John Philip Sousa, Sarah Bernhardt, and Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. Today, the theatre hosts a variety of events, from plays to films to musical performances.

McLain State Park

Hancock

Most of McLain State Park's beaches are rocky, but the area does have a strip of land known as the Breakwaters that's a great spot for swimming and sunbathing, as are areas near the state park's campground. Bicyclists and hikers will find plenty of places to explore, while in the winter, cross country skiers can have their turn at the trails. The park, positioned at the tippy-top of Houghton County, is also known for its gorgeous sunsets.

Quincy Mine Hoist

Hancock

By Andrew Jameson (Own work) [CC BY-SA 3.0 or GFDL], via Wikimedia Commons

For nearly 100 years, the Quincy Mine was responsible for supplying a significant amount of the Upper Peninsula's copper, so much so that the mine earned the nickname "Old Reliable." When the mine ceased most of its operations in 1945, its number two shaft had a length of 9,260 feet---a distance of 1.75 miles. At the time, it was the deepest mine shaft in the world.

Today, visitors don't have to risk life and limb to visit this historic facility. Three guided tour options are available, including the full tour, during which guests take a tram to the mine entrance, then take a wagon ride seven levels below the ground. While at the Quincy Mine, visitors also get a chance to see the Nordberg Steam Hoist, the largest steam-powered hoist engine ever built.
